چکیده

The operational environments of sensor networks will alter over time, often due to hazardous conditions or fluctuating resource availability; however this important characteristic of sensor networks has yet to be fully addressed by current middleware solutions. In this article, we present a reflective middleware solution for co-ordinated dynamic reconfiguration of middleware behaviour across nodes in a sensor network. We evaluate this approach in a real-world case study; firstly, we demonstrate how dynamic reconfiguration optimises the performance and resource consumption of a sensor application, and secondly we illustrate that the costs of reconfiguration are not prohibitive in this domain.

Dynamic Reconfiguration in Sensor Middleware (DRAFT)

Middleware solutions for sensor networks have so far mainly focused on communication abstractions, ad-hoc message routing protocols, and power conservation techniques. We argue that customisation and dynamic reconfiguration of sensor network middleware are additional important dimensions to consider. This paper describes a sensor middleware that can be customised to suit different sensor applic...

Access control in ultra-large-scale systems using a data-centric middleware

The primary characteristic of an Ultra-Large-Scale (ULS) system is ultra-large size on any related dimension. A ULS system is generally considered as a system-of-systems with heterogeneous nodes and autonomous domains. As the size of a system-of-systems grows, and interoperability demand between sub-systems is increased, achieving more scalable and dynamic access control system becomes an im...

Dynamic Software Reconfiguration in Programmable Networks

Programmable networks allow third parties to reprogram networking devices. By opening up the execution environment of routers, firewalls, gateways, etc., users and service providers can adapt the behavior of these devices to meet their own specific needs. Programmable networks are therefore an interesting technology to build adaptive networks and to support the increasing evolution of networkin...

Dynamic Reconfiguration of Object-Middleware-based Distributed Systems

Distributed systems with high availability requirements have to support some form of dynamic reconfiguration. This means that they must provide the ability to be maintained or upgraded without being taken off-line. This thesis addresses the dynamic reconfiguration of distributed applications that run on top of an object-middleware infrastructure. In this context, a system configuration is defin...

ReWiSe: A New Component Model for Lightweight Software Reconfiguration in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are increasingly being deployed for applications with dynamic requirements. Moreover, these applications are likely to be run on nodes with different sensing parameters and capabilities. Addressing these issues in higher layers of WSNs architecture such as middleware and application, beside the consideration of lower layers, is of high importance. Reconfiguration...
